Christmas Santa Beard Free Crochet Pattern

I got a fun Christmas package for the kids a few days ago! My mom made my little man and adorable Santa Hat, Beard and Santa Shirt. He's been wearing his little costume out Christmas shopping! People just loved it!  Made for some fun and Holiday Cheer everywhere we went!

I asked my mom about the patterns and silly me she used my"Fear the Beard" pattern that I wrote last year. You can use the same pattern as before just with simple yarn changes to make a Santa Beard!

Follow the "Fear the Beard" pattern using one strand each of White, worsted weight yarn and a novelty yarn like Fun fur or Boa. You'll crochet with both at the same time.

If you like the hat here is the link to the one she was inspired by.
She adjusted the size and the brim though so you'd have to work that out on your own.

This makes a fun last minute Holiday gift your kids will enjoy!

Pony and Hero Hat Creations

It's a busy time of year for crocheters. Lots of presents to make for our friends and loved ones on top of regular orders. I've managed to find a few spare minutes to whip up gifts for my nephews and a special hat for my Calleigh. I rarely make things for my kids so that's especially been fun!

My Calleigh looooves My Little Pony! She requested a pony hat but, she couldn't decide which one, so I just decided for her. I went with the most colorful one, Rainbow Dash! I decided I was just going to wing it. There is no pattern for this hat. I do not plan on writing one either. I will walk you through how I made it though.

I amazingly had every color I needed in my stash. I use Vanna's Choice for the whole hat! I just love the colors from Vanna's as they all go together perfectly!

I started with a sc base because I knew there would be a lot of details. Sewing on the sc base is easier and holds shape better. The eyes are super detailed. I was afraid I wouldn't have two eyes the same. They aren't but they work LOL!
They are a mix of crochet and embroidery to get in every sparkle in her eyes!

Here she is before hair! I made her snout several times before I liked it.
I wasn't going to put one but she didn't seem finished without one.

On to the last step! That Pesky Main.  Now I know Rainbow Dash doesn't have curly hair but I thought this would be the easiest method and not be super heavy. I'll even give you a simple pattern to follow for these spirals!

I used Vanna's Choice and H-Hook (5.00mm)

I made two of each color
Red, Yellow & Orange = ch 20
Green, Blue = ch 30
Purple = ch 40
*make sure to leave about 4" tail  at the begining to sew on to hat.

To work the spirals, In the 2nd ch from the hook repeat this pattern along the length of the chain.
(hdc3 in next ch, hdc2 in next ch)
At the end of the row fasten off and use the tail ends to tie them on to the hat as desired.
I did use the ends to tie in a knot two times, then weaved the end back up through the spirals. You don't have to knot as I know it's a crochet no, no but I wanted these very secure!

These didn't take to long and you can always add more but I thought this was just enough coverage with out to much extra weight. Calleigh loves flipping her pony hair around :)

******

I made these other two hats a few weeks ago actually! These will be gifts for my nephews! My son kindly agreed to smile If I make him a Batman one next :) Of course I will! These are graph beanies. I've used the pattern many times. You can find hat base pattern from Playin' Hooky Designs here. She sells several graphs that I know you'll like. I used her Spiderman Graph.

(She even has My Little Pony graphs for the main six Cutie marks!)

For Superman I found this graph pinned here. It worked out okay but I think I may just appliqué it next time. Just needs to be worked out a bit. Not all graphs work out great and need some tweaking. That is one thing I love about Playin Hooky's graphs is that she takes time to work through them and make sure they look great!

If you've never worked with graphs this a a fabulous pattern that will work you through it and she is also very helpful if you need assistance!

Well I have more gifts, patterns and projects in the works! Excited about this Holiday Season and New Year to come!

Giveaway : Cabled Button Hat and Mitts

Recently a friend of mine made an amazingly adorable hat and shared it in our Facebook group! Many people asked about the design which she freehanded. Many hoped she would design it but she'd never written a pattern before. With encouragement, she decided to give it a whirl! I'm so glad she did! It's a great design that I had the privilege to test!
It's seriously my new favorite hat! I know that you will love it too!

It is an intermediate pattern, but not to difficult. I love the way she explains how to work the cables and she's given me a new love for reverse single crochet. (we kinda had a love hate relationship but I think I have it down now) The construction of the hat is great! If you love slouchy hats (which seem to be the popular style this season) then you will really like this hat! The cabling on the brim make it thicker, so it's warm and cozy.

Add some personal flare by adding a big button or 2-3 small buttons. I've even seen few make the brim one color and the hat body another or variegated! So many options! This makes the perfect gifts by pairing it with the matching fingerless gloves!

Here are my samples:

Made this one with impeccable, I can't remember the name but it's black with jewel tones metallic thread. It's really pretty in person. The button is black with glittery sparkles too!

It's my new favorite!!

Wanted to make another because I loved the pattern so much! Chose a more neutral tone and a soft yarn. My new favorite Lion Brand Heartand. It's a cream heather.

I wanted to make matching gloves with the Heartland but I ran out on the 1st glove so I told my hubby to pick a color. He said purple. I found a skien of Bernat Sheepish in Plumish. Gorgeous color!! I added a winter touch of sparkly snowflake buttons.

So let's get to that giveaway!
Rachel of Silly Stitches has graciously allowed me to offer you a chance to win both crochet patterns and offer a 30% discount on the pattern today only (Monday) in Raverly!!

Use the Code : ccccaddicts

Giveaway will run Mon Dec 2nd - Wed. Dec 4th Mid. Central
A Winner Will be Chosen on Thurs. Dec 5th. - Winner will be notified by email and will be responsible to contact the winner to claim the prize with in 48 hrs or a new winner will be chosen.

Good luck!

Free Crochet Pattern - Key Tab Boot Cuffs

Introducing the Key Tab Boot Cuffs. This is the 3rd pattern in a series following the Key Tab Slouchy and the Key Tab Fingerless gloves. There will be one more pattern to complete this fabulous set!
I don't know why I love this stitch so much but I do. I hope you do too!
These have all be fun to design.

Boot cuffs had to grow on me. I didn't really think I'd care for them. Most my boots aren't meant for boot cuffs but I forgot my hubby bought me these awesome Coach boots last year and they are perfect for cuffs! Now I want them in ever color. These work up fast and the stitch has a lacy look to it, so not to much bulk, but some extra warmth. A great way to add a pop of color to your outfit.

These are written to fit me and I don't have skinny legs so you may need to adjust the pattern to fit bigger or smaller. The ribbing pattern just needs to be worked in multiples of 4, or you could simply adjust up or down a hook size.

Guest Post : What's Gauge Got to Do With It? by Sara Duggan

Today's post is a guest post by Sara Duggan as part of her Hooking for Cash Blog Tour.

We have been discussing gauge a lot lately so this is perfect timing and I hope you will find it very informative.

How many times have you neglected to crochet a sample swatch? I know I used to ignore that part of patterns thinking it really doesn't matter. It's no wonder I found some hats super gigantic and others small enough to fit a newborn. What went wrong? G.A.U.G.E.

Yes, the ever important gauge. For those new to crocheting this is critical in getting the proper size in garments, scarves, blankets, hats, etc. It doesn't matter so much for scrubbies, amigurumi, or little odd ball projects but let's say you want to make yourself a nice vest?

You can't just pick up the yarn you like and your favorite crochet hook - sorry, even though it is made of apple wood and hand turned by your great grandfather, if it doesn't meet the gauge you have to set it aside for another project.

What's so Important About Gauge Anyway?†

  • It is the number one key to getting the proper size
  • How do You Determine Gauge?†

    • Most commercially published patterns will have this included. You will see something like - In sc, 25 sts = 4"

    • First you need to know the yarn and hook size the designer used. This is usually stated in the pattern. The brand and type of fiber is NOT what is important but the weight of the yarn is. This includes lace weight all the way up to bulky. As long as you match the weight of the yarn you can get a gauge that matches.

    • Second you need to crochet a sample swatch in the yarn you have chosen in the recommended hook. Now measure this? Does your swatch measure 4" across (25 sc sts)? If not, you need to rip that out and start over again.

    • Too Big? use a smaller hook

    • Too Small? use a bigger hook

    • Keep at it until your sample swatch is 25 sc sts and measures 4" (YAY!)
